Assassin's Creed Shadows: How I Recruited Yagoro and Why He's Worth It

Recruit Yagoro in Assassin's Creed Shadows with this concise guide to his hidden-blade quest, combat, and rewarding follow-up missions.

So you're roaming Feudal Japan in Assassin's Creed Shadows, hunting the Shinbakfu, and wondering whether every recruit has to come from a grand story beat? That's exactly how I felt before I stumbled into Yagoro's recruitment quest. Even in 2026, this little detour is one of my favorite side stories because it gives you a cool ally, a mysterious blade, and a fight that doesn't overstay its welcome. Here's how I recruited him, what happens if you push through his follow-up missions, and why I think he's worth the slot on your roster.

Where I Found Yagoro 🗡️

The first step is finding him in northern Engyoji, north of Maniden Hall. At the mission's start point, Naoe or Yasuke can find a body with a wound that looks like it came from a hidden blade. That detail matters, right? It's the hook that makes you ask why some random shinobi has a weapon that feels suspiciously similar to Naoe's. Follow the tracks and you'll eventually have to chase a 'suspicious shinobi', who turns out to be Yagoro.

When you talk to him, the conversation doesn't stay peaceful for long. You fight him to test his skills, and he behaves like other shinobi characters you've faced: tricks, ranged knife attacks, and quick slashes. Is he a tough boss? Not really. I took him down with Yasuke, but Naoe works fine too. Just keep an eye on deflecting or blocking his attacks, and don't let his knife throws make you panic.

The Lead Samurai and the Blade Reveal ⚔️

After the duel, you need to kill the lead samurai Yagoro was after. He's in Jyujiin Courtyard, close to where you fought Yagoro, and several other enemies are hanging around. This is where I'd argue the quest was clearly more meant for Naoe, but Yasuke makes more sense for such a combat-heavy encounter, especially since most samurai can't be stealth killed very easily. The lead samurai won't give you much trouble at this point in the game. Taking him out triggers a cutscene with Yagoro, and that's where the blade's origin is revealed: it's a copy Yagoro made himself. You get a few dialogue options during the scene, but no matter what you choose, you end up recruiting Yagoro to your cause. Is that a relief? For me, yes. I hate missing a recruit because of one dialogue choice.

What Yagoro Can Do ✅

Yagoro might be recruited in the first quest to do with him, but that's not where his questline ends. You can choose to do more story missions linked to him if you like, starting with Past and Present. That mission shows him growing in skill and becoming known in his hometown in Tamba. Unlike some of the game's other allies, Yagoro isn't a romance option, so you're going to have to just stick to being a mentor to him. Is that a downside? Maybe if you were hoping for another relationship arc, but I actually liked the mentor vibe. He's a handy ally to have, though, as his copied hidden blade makes him great for calling upon when you want to assassinate enemies who have fewer than three health chunks.

Here's a quick reference I wish I'd had before starting:

Step What to do My note
1 Find the body in northern Engyoji, north of Maniden Hall Look for the hidden blade wound
2 Follow the tracks and chase the suspicious shinobi It's Yagoro
3 Talk, then fight him Deflect and block; don't overthink it
4 Kill the lead samurai in Jyujiin Courtyard Yasuke made this easier for me
5 Watch the cutscene and pick dialogue Any choice recruits him
6 Try Past and Present Optional, but good for his growth

My Verdict

Would I recruit Yagoro again in 2026? Absolutely. He isn't the flashiest ally in Assassin's Creed Shadows, and his quest won't take you across the whole map, but it's a tight, memorable little story. The copied hidden blade is a fun mystery, the fight is approachable, and his assassination support is genuinely useful when you're cleaning up enemies with fewer than three health chunks. If you're like me and you enjoy mentoring a young warrior who's clearly trying to find his place, give Yagoro a chance. He might not be romanceable, but he's reliable, and sometimes that's exactly what you need in Feudal Japan.
